Global Education and its Social Benefits

April 5, 2013:

The world is a global village. People from different cultures now interact on a daily basis. Global education is a term devised because of this increased inter-racial communication. Educators have the crucial responsibility to provide learners with competence and opportunity to share and reflect their own role and point of view within the interconnected and global society.

Along with this, learners should be able to understand and comment on the complex relationships of common, ecological, social, economic and political issues. This will help them derive new ways of acting and thinking. The United States government has tried to introduce the concept of global education since the 1980s. However, it has received criticism from the general public who believes such education is anti-Americanism or that it encourages and introduces disunity.

U.S students are becoming increasingly aware of countries other than their own. With many countries in the Middle East, Europe and Asia hiring people from the U.S, these students are realizing the fact that they are not aware of any other culture other than their own. In geography, students only learn about the different land marks and geographical boundaries. Culture and language are not covered in the subject.

Students who have experienced global education or have been brought up in countries other than their native country are more likely to understand how another culture is different from their own. People need to understand that foreign policy is not to be ignored. Different economic, political and social activities around the world impact us in some way or the other.

Global education has many different social benefits. If a person is able to understand and learn about the culture and language of another country, the person is able to easily live in that country. People can invest in other countries and extend their business to these countries.

Countries can also collaborate on common global issues, like war on terror, AIDS/HIV and other international problems. Cross-cultural awareness leads to increased tolerance along with a better educated and globally aware citizenry.

For those who think that it will increase cultural division, they are in for a surprise. Global education is totally the opposite. An increased focus on global education will have all humans come together and think about a better future for the entire world instead of being country specific.

Another important aspect is people from one culture can understand and accept another culture only if they are aware of the culture. This can be achieved through global education. Global education shifts one’s way of thinking by introducing the concept of global partnership based on global education, cooperation and dialogue. This concept helps people interact much better. It helps students adapt to other environments, accept different teaching styles and communicate effectively with diverse groups.

To sum it up, global education puts human dignity at the center of its purpose and encourages equality. It also highlights one’s ability to interact and work with people from diverse cultures.
